What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd?
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori approach to religious formation of children ages 3-12, based on the pillars of Scripture and Catholic Liturgy. CGS was developed in 1954, in Rome, by Dr. Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi, and has since spread throughout the world and is now used in homes, parishes, and schools.
What is an Atrium?
The Atrium is a space that helps the relationship between God and the child flourish. The environment is carefully prepared to be a calm and inviting place. Guided by the Holy Spirit, children deepen their relationship with God through their time in the Atrium, pondering the greatest mysteries of our faith.
The materials used in the Atrium are simple and essential to the development of the child's relationship with God. Items in the Atrium are carefully selected and created out of natural materials. Many of the materials remind the child of what they see in the Church.
Children are taught a sense of reverence for the Atrium and the items it contains. Behavior in the Atrium is expected to be peaceful and respectful, as what is expected when Mass is attended.
Who Leads CGS Sessions?
Catechists who lead CGS receive significant training through adult formation courses sponsored by the SonFlower Region of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and the U.S. Association of the CGS. If you are interested in becoming a CGS Catechist, visit www.cgsusa.org. Volunteers are welcome to assist the catechist and do not need to receive special training. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the parish's Religious Formation Coordinator.
What are CGS Level 1 and CGS Level 2?
CGS Level 1 is for children 3-6 years of age. This atrium focuses on God's unconditional love through the Parable of the Good Shepherd.
CGS Level 2 is for children 6-12 years of age. This atrium is referred to as the True Vine and builds on the unconventional love between God and His Children.
All sessions consist of a presentation of new material, work time, and prayer. Presentations are selected to coincide with the Church year. Many of the lessons are linked to the liturgy. Children benefit greatly when attending Mass with their family regularly.
What is currently offered?
While St. Matthew Church has both Level 1 and 2 Atriums, due to available trained CGS Catechists we are only offering Level 1 for ages 3-6. CGS is held on Wednesday evenings, September through the first week of May.
